John 6:26-30 (ESV)
Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.” Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”
The work of God – Believe in Him Whom He has sent. So simple, yet so difficult. As we have noted before, we humans like to do things. We like to think there is something we can accomplish in exchange for something else.
In days gone by just about everyone refused “charity.” If you offered a sum of money to someone to do a job, then that was great and appreciated. But if you merely offered to give them something, they would not accept it.
So this Jesus comes along teaching that not only do you not have to earn God’s forgiveness, you CANNOT earn it. This was a hard teaching back then, and it still is a hard teaching today. We still want to earn what we get.
Pastor Rob pointed out recently in his sermon, that the faith God requires is an active faith. This does not mean that we must work for our salvation, but that if we believe in Jesus it will cause a change in us. We will do what pleases God out of gratitude for His gift.
So let us live with gratitude in our hearts. Let us share God’s blessings with one another. Let us demonstrate the Love of God in our daily lives.
