The Stumbling Stone

Luke 12:49-53 (ESV)

I came to cast fire on the earth, and would that it were already kindled! I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how great is my distress until it is accomplished! Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. For from now on in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three. They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”

Before Jesus went to Jerusalem to be handed over to the priests, He told His disciples things like this. He was explaining in more detail about His purpose which people not filled with the Holy Spirit cannot understand. In Romans 9:33, Paul says this about Jesus: “as it is written, ‘Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense; and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.’” This is a quote from Isaiah (8:14). Peter makes the same correlation in 1Peter 2:8.

For those of us that have the Holy Spirit living in us, He is the Cornerstone and the Keystone. Our foundation and our finish. He is not the stumbling stone for us. But Jesus causes division and even hatred, because of what He told His disciples in John. If they hate Me, they will hate you. So if we do as Jesus did, we will be hated by those who do not accept Him.

We need to be about His business, sharing His love and even His judgment on this world. For the world is destined for destruction. And those who do not know God are rushing to destroy faster than ever.

But we should take heart. Jesus did not leave us orpans. He did give us the Holy Spirit. God is still on the throne, making heaven ready for us.
