The Armor of God

Ephesians 6:10-18 (ESV)

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication.

I had a discussion at work early this week with a customer about the armor of God. He seemed to think that the armor of God must be put on by speaking out loud. Since God knows even our thoughts and the desires of our hearts, I disagreed with him. I don’t think it hurts anything to say out loud that I am putting on the whole armor of God, but I believe thinking it through is just as good.

I believe it is important to remember that we are in a spiritual war. We need the armor of God to be able to defend ourselves against the attacks of the evil spirits lurking about us daily. We live in a fallen world, and it is not just going to Hell, it is in a hurry to get there.

It is important to review the armor of God and put it on daily:

Belt of Truth – defends against lies and deceit

Breastplate of Righteousness – protects us from temptation and demonstrates our commitment to doing good.

Shoes of Readiness of Gospel – we take the Gospel everywhere. The peace we have in our hearts and minds comes from the truth of the Gospel

Shield of Faith – trusting in God to help us, and to keep us in His care.

Helmet of Salvation – remembering that we are saved through faith in Jesus protects our minds

Sword of the Spirit – reading and studying God’s Word prepares our minds as well as causes the demonic forces to leave. With the sword we can strike back against the evil. Just as Jesus used the Word of God to defend against Satan’s temptations, we can do the same.

Note the armor is defensive. Even the Sword of the Spirit is a close quarters weapon. It will not reach out a long distance away. God will handle the big stuff. We just need to rely upon Him and do what we can to fight off the direct attacks, keeping the Shield of Faith, relying on The Lord to do what we cannot.

May God bless you today and everyday as you put on His Armor and rely upon Him to protect you.
