Righteousness is Not Our Own

Psalm 14:1-7 (ESV)

The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds, there is none who does good. The LORD looks down from heaven on the children of man, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God. They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one. Have they no knowledge, all the evildoers who eat up my people as they eat bread and do not call upon the LORD? There they are in great terror, for God is with the generation of the righteous. You would shame the plans of the poor, but the LORD is his refuge. Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion! When the LORD restores the fortunes of his people, let Jacob rejoice, let Israel be glad.

We humans have long troubled our Creator. Yet He in His mercy made a way for us to be saved. This is why we speak of man being not good enough. We could never approach the throne of God without the covering of Jesus’ blood. Without grace, we would be wiped out.

Fortunately, He DID make a way for us to live! He made us worthy by His sacrifice. It did more than merely take away some of our sin. His sacrifice paid the penalty for ALL our sin. All sin for all people, for all time. Wow what a gift. What glorious love He had for us that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

This is the Gospel. This is our hope. This is what we are called, even commanded to pass on to others. The grace of God purifies us, and makes us whole. May we in our gratitude for what He has done continue to bring others to know and serve God.
