How Great is God's Love by Ken Edgerly
For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God. Ephesians 3:14-19 NASB 1 Corinthians 13:13 says "And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love."
I used to think of faith, hope, and love as fuzzy feelings, or at best emotions that help us in tough times. Now I see these as being strong forces with love being the greatest. We have been given hope which gives us power to continue looking forward to our great inheritance, but love is greater than hope. In Matthew 17 Jesus says if you have faith as small as a grain of mustard seed, you can move a mountain and love is even greater than faith. What a powerful force love really is.
Here in Ephesians, Paul says he prays that we can grasp the greatness of God's love. The width of His love covers all our sins. It's easy for me to say us but to say it covers all my sins, that for some reason is tougher for me to grasp. The length of His love, easy to say he loved us before he made us and will love us through eternity. Easy to say us but again tougher to say me. The height of His love, lifting us up to reign with Him as the body of Christ forever. Same thing, I just, some days, can't imagine being at all worthy. The depth of His love, to be willing to die for us. Putting me in with us again is easy but to say me? Why would he do that for me? Not being able to fully and confidently say me, diminishes the fullness of His love. Each one of us individually must realize and be able to say me personally in order to see how great His love really is. God is wanting to give us the power of His love but the enemy is so good with his lies, getting us to believe we are unworthy of God's love. It is only because of God's love that we are even made worthy. We must believe this, totally, in order to not just be filled with God or with His fullness but to the measure of ALL the fullness of God.
Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen. Ephesians 3:20-21 NASB
