Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children; and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma. Ephesians 5:1-2 NASB
Imitating God sounds like a pretty easy thing to do and a good thing since God is good so I think l can do that. But then it says and walk in love, that's a little tougher sounding but still not too bad a thing to do. Just as God loved you. Well that means even when I didn't deserve it He still loved me and I must do the same for others, ok, but that is making imitating God a little tougher. And gave Himself up for us, as an offering and a sacrifice to God. Wow, now it's getting tougher, I need to be willing to die for or at least give up my own interests to help someone else even when they don't really deserve it. So much easier to just imitate the people around me so I'll be accepted by them and just fit in and then when I can I'll try being nice once in awhile, as long as they are nice first. I guess the main difference between the two lifestyles is this. Living as God lives, you must live mainly in the spiritual realm and make your spiritual being the dominate part, being in constant communication and allowing the Holy Spirit to work through us. While living as the people around us means we are living mostly in the natural realm or taking care of and feeding the physical part of us. The rewards and consequences have great differences in endings. I'm careful not to just say, living in the flesh since there are groups who believe when you refer to flesh you are talking about the sinful part of your being, which is not necessarily what I'm referring to. I'm talking about focusing on taking care of our day to day personal life things and our own interests. When I live life imitating God it's amazing how much more peace and joy there is even though it seems like a tougher thing to do. While living to please others and mostly myself brings frustrations and after awhile guilt, knowing something's missing in my life, even though it seems so much easier to live that way. Later Paul says,
So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father; and be subject to one another in the fear of Christ. Ephesians 5:17-21 NASB This sounds more like living in the spiritual realm, or imitating God. Takes more effort and not always as popular with people around you but in the end so much more worth it.
So walking in ways which people will see you, as someone who is wise and being an imitator of Christ, that is the walk I want to take.
