Psalm 1:1-6 (ESV)
Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; for the LORD knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
This psalm is one of several that have no inscription of who wrote it or when. But it sets the stage in the beginning of the book of Psalms to give us a sense of God’s presence. I like this psalm because it reminds us that we are responsible to God. God will honor (care for) those who do right and will punish those who do not.
The phrase ...nor stands in the way of sinners... does not mean blocking them. It means to do what they do, present themselves haughtily, full of pride, proud of their sinful ways. It reminds me of the drug cartel guy in Crocodile Dundee II - Who relishes the lifestyle he has because of all the money he makes selling drugs. He does not care about who may or may not be harmed because of drugs. He only cares that he lives a life of plenty, and has a plan to retire early and perhaps buy a small island on which to live out the rest of his days.
I would rather be like the psalmist says, Blessed is the man who...his delight is in the law of the LORD. Although life can be frustrating at times, I look forward to the NEXT life. Eternity in the presence of the Almighty God. We do not know exactly what God has planned for us, but we know it will be awesome. The Scriptures tell us that, ...eye has not seen, ear has not heard, nor has it entered into the heart of man what God has prepared for those who love Him...
We need to focus our lives and energies on honoring God. We need to be certain that we are living in such a way that God is glorified. Although we cannot earn salvation or God’s favor by so doing, we must honor God because He is God. He rightfully demands that we do exactly that. God will honor those who honor Him.
I seek to honor God because it is the right thing to do. Yes, I look forward to receiving whatever God chooses to bless me with, but even if is only to be in His presence for eternity, that will be beyond anything I can imagine.
Mercy Me, a Christian band, wrote a song called, “I Can Only Imagine”, where he expresses his wonder about what it might be like when he sees God face to face. If you are unfamiliar with this song, or even if you are familiar, it is worth the few minutes to go to Youtube and let it play.
