A Fresh Start on life!

I wrote this for a sermon back in 2009 and I thought I would share it with you. My hope is we can all have a FRESH START on life in 2020. It will not be easy, but it is possible. It will require some CHANGE on our part, that’s the problem, most of us do not like change. I would be willing to bet almost everyone here this morning has something they would like to change about themselves. The bad thing is we often let fear stop us from making that change. We fear the steps that we must make to get there.

Ok, here are four changes we will need to make if we want a FRESH start in 2020.

First, get past your past. SATAN will remind us of our past in order to keep us from enjoying the life that God wants us to experience. SATAN does not want us to have a fresh start in life. The good news is Jesus has come to give US LIFE and to give it to us abundantly. Here is something that you may never have thought about, God is far more interested in our future than He is concerned about our past. People can hurt us, people can harm us, people can scar us. Are we going to LET THEM DETERMINE OUR LIVES? The only person that can ruin your life is you.

Second, the way we think determines the way we feel and act. If we are going to change then we need to refocus our thoughts. If you are depressed, discouraged, and distressed, maybe it is because you are thinking depressed, discouraged, and distressing thoughts. That is your choice. You do not have to think those thoughts. Which memories are we still rehearsing that keep us from experiencing a fresh start in life?

Third, we must start being HONEST WITH OURSELVES. We are tempted to cover up the things we do not like and to pretend we are holier than we are. Here is a news flash, we are ALL BROKEN, none are righteous enough to earn heaven. If we are going to embrace change, we must start by being honest with ourselves!

Last, we must start TRUSTING GOD. We cannot just depend on ourselves. We have already proven were that will lead us. Why are we so prideful to think we do not need anyone else? We do not have the power to change some things, it is going to take some help. It is going to take God, and maybe even some other people in your lives.

We can have fresh start with a new life that includes God. God says, “I don’t want you to turn over a new leaf. I’m going to give you a whole new life.” That sounds exciting to me.

God wants His church and you to experience a life that is way beyond what we can imagine. As a church, it will take us out of our comfort zones and help us reach people for Christ.

That is why I am so proud of the Gathering House. We are a church that is not afraid of change. We are a church who looks toward God - with anticipation. We are always asking – “What’s He going to do next?”
