Proverbs 18:24 (ESV)
A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
I am currently visiting an old friend. We served together in the Army in Germany back in 1991. It is amazing how close we got in a short year that we were together back then. But, He spent a lot of time with my wife, my (firstborn) son, and me. We used to go to visit an old castle ruins and swim in the spring fed moat around it. We traveled to several German historical sites and since we had the same career field, we went to training conferences together. In fact, since he hung out with us so much, his mother complained that he was losing his southern accent.
He has since gotten married, and has a daughter now. All these things are merely background.
This Scripture, I believe, is more referring to our relationship to God (Jesus is our friend), but can apply to our relationships in this world as well. When you find a good friend, nurture that relationship. Grow closer. Become vulnerable. Rarely will you find the type of friend that will stick by you closer than a brother, but it does happen. I have a few of them, actually. Most of them are from Army days. But a couple others now that I am no longer an active soldier.
Trust your greatest friend, Jesus. He will never leave you or forsake you.
